Siegel cheer coach decides to retire
Debby James, the only cheer coach in Siegel High's history, recently announced her retirement from the program. James plans to remain at the school as an English teacher.
James was named the TSSAA Cheer Coach of the Year in 2011 as the Stars were the TSSAA state champions and finished fifth in the nation. Siegel placed ninth in the National Cheerleading Championships of 39 teams in its division.
Fourteen of her former cheerleaders have gone on to cheer at the college level and six of her seven current seniors plan on trying out in the spring.
Siegel placed third at the cheer nationals during the school's first year. In 2008, the co-ed sqad earned three national championships, including the Cheersport Grand Championships, at Jamfest and the Athletic National Championships.
